1. Most of it doesn’t matter. So much of what I got excited about, anxious about, or wasted my time and energy on, turned out not to matter. There are only a few things that truly count for a happy life. I wish I had known to concentrate on those and ignore the rest.

2. The greatest source of misery and hatred in this world is clinging to past hurts.Look at all the terrorists and militant groups that hark back to some event long gone, or base their justification for killing on claims of some supposed historical right to a bit of land, or redress for a wrong done hundreds of years ago.

3. Waiting to do something until you can be sure of doing it exactly right means waiting for ever. One of the greatest advantages anyone can have is the willingness to make a fool of themselves publicly and often. There’s no better way to learn and develop. Heck, it’s fun too.

4.Following the latest fashion, in work or in life, is spiritual and intellectual suicide. You can be a cheap imitation of the ideal of the moment; or you can be a unique individual. The choice is yours. Religion isn’t the opiate of the masses, fashion is.

5. If people complain that you’re too fond of going your own way and aren’t fitting in, you must be on the right track.Who wants to live life as a herd animal? The guys in power don’t want you to fit in for your own sake; they want you to stop causing them problems and follow their orders. You can’t have the freedom to be yourself and meekly fit in at the same time.

6. If you make your work your life, you’re making your life into hard work. Like most people,I confused myself by looking at people like artists and musicians whose life’s “work” fills their time. That isn’t work. It’s who they are. Unless you have some overwhelming passion that also happens to allow you to earn a living doing it, always remember that work should be a means to an end: living an enjoyable life. Spend as little time on the means as possible consistent with achieving the end. Only idiots live to work.

7. The quickest and simplest way to wreck any relationship is to listen to gossip. The worst way to spend your time is spreading more. People who spread gossip are the plague-carriers of our day. Cockroaches are clean, kindly creatures in comparison.

8. Trying to please other people is largely a futile activity. Everyone will be mad at you sometime. Most of the people you deal with will dislike, disparage, belittle, or ignore what you say or do most of the time. Besides, you can never really know what others do want, so a good deal of whatever you do in that regard will go to waste. Be comforted. Those who love you will probably love you regardless, and they are the ones whose opinions are worth caring about. The rest aren’t worth five minutes of thought between them.

9. Every winner is destined to be a loser in due course. It’s great to be up on the winner’s podium. Just don’t imagine you can stay there for ever. Worst of all is being determined to do so, by any means available.

10.You can rarely, if ever, please, placate, change, or mollify an asshole. The best thing you can do is stay away from every one you encounter. Being an asshole is a contagious disease. The more time you spend around one, the more likely you are to catch it and become one too.

11. Everything takes twiceas long as you plan for and produces results about half as good as you hoped. There’s no reason to be downhearted about this. Just allow for it and move on.

12. People are oddly consistent.Liars usually tell lies. Cheaters cheat whenever it suits them. A person who confides in you has usually confided in several others first—but not got the response they wanted. A loyal friend will stay loyal under enormous amounts of thoughtless abuse.

13.However hard you try, you can’t avoid being yourself.Who else could you be? You can act and pretend, but the person acting and pretending is still you. And if you won’t accept yourself—and do the best you can with what you have—who then has any obligation to accept you?

14. When it comes to blatant lies, there are none more egregious than budget figures.Time spent agonizing over them is time wasted. Even if (miracle of miracles!) yours are honest and accurate, no one else will have been so foolish.

15. The loudest noise in the world is the sound of people whining.Don’t add to it.

Dangling Modifiers

If a phrase modifies a word or phrase that is not clearly given in the sentence, it is a dangling modifier; it is dangling because it does not connect with what it is supposed to.

  • Having finished the homework, I went to bed.
  • Arriving at the restaurant half an hour late, the table had been taken.

In the first sentence, it is clear that the person who finished the homework and the person who went to bed are one and the same, so it is correct. In the second sentence, it is not the table that arrived late, but the speaker, so this is a dangling modifier. This could be repaired by using 'we found that the table had been taken'. Dangling modifiers can make the meaning of the sentence unclear, so they should be avoided. The subject of the main verb should be the same as the modifier in such cases.

All & Whole

These words often have the same meaning, but they are used differently.

With the definite article:
All comes before the definite article: All the time

Whole comes after the definite article: The whole time

With a possessive adjective:
All comes before a possessive adjective: All my life

Whole comes after a possessive adjective: My whole life

With a singular noun:
Whole can only be used after a definite article: The whole country (not 'Whole country')

With Plural Nouns:
They have different meanings:

All exams were affected. = Every exam was affected.
Whole exams were affected. = This doesn't mean that every exam was affected, but that some were affected completely.

With uncountable nouns:
We generally use all. We can say 'the whole of the' before an uncountable noun.

Agreeing and Disagreeing- So do I, Neither do I, etc

To agree with a positive statement:
We use so + auxiliary/modal verb + pronoun:

"I like tea without sugar.'
'So do I.'

To agree with a negative statement:
We use nor/neither + auxiliary/modal verb + pronoun:

"I don't like tea with sugar.'
'Nor do I.' or 'Neither do I.'

To disagree with a positive statement:
We use pronoun + auxiliary/modal verb + not (-n't):

"I like tea without sugar.'
'I don't.'

To disagree with a negative statement:
We use pronoun + auxiliary/modal verb:

"I don't like tea with sugar.'
'I do.

Absent-minded Professor

A professor was still thinking about a deep problem when he reached home. At his door he pressed the doorbell for three times. Then a maid's voice from the second floor answered, “Sorry, the professor is not in!”

“Not in?” the professor muttered absent-mindedly, “then I'll come again a little while later.” With this he strolled back to his lab.

Misinterpretation

A father took his young son to the opera for the first time. The conductor started waving the baton, and the soprano began her aria. The boy watched everything intently and finally asked, “Why is he trying to hit her with his stick?”

“He's not hitting her,” said the father with a chuckle.

“Well, then,” asked the boy, “why is she screaming?”

Ripeness Is All

Gloucester: No further, sir; a man may rot even here.

Edgar: What! in ill thoughts again! Men may endure

Their going hence, even as their coming hither:

Ripeness is all. Come on. (King Lear, V, ii, 8-11)

在《法度對法度》(Measure for Measure) 一劇中,當女主角伊莎貝拉 (Isabella) 祈求「成熟的時間」 (ripened time) 去「解開包藏的邪惡 」(unfold the evil which is wrapped up) 時,她也就是相信「時機一旦成熟,必有自然的報應」。

Madness with Method

Polonius: “Though this be madness, yet there is method in't.” (II, ii, 205)

Hamlet: “I am but mad north-north-west. When the wind is southerly, I know a hawk from a handsaw.”
(II, ii, 374-5)

Fell into a sadness, then into a fast,
Thence to a watch, thence into a weakness
Thence to a lightness, and, by this declension,
Into the madness …. (147-50)

五、裝瘋的哈姆雷特的確頭腦很清楚,所以他才會考慮「存在,或不存在」(“To be, or not to be”) 的問題,才會想出「以上演情節雷同的戲,來測試觀眾的良知,進而捕捉到凶嫌」的妙策,也才會說出許多有意思的名言,像「脆弱,你的名字是女人!」(“Frailty, thy name is woman!”), 「事本無好壞,思想使其然」(“There is nothing good or bad, but thinking makes it so”), 和 「上帝給你一張臉,你卻給自己造出另一張」(“God hath given you one face, and you make yourself another”) 等。

Ambition's Ladder

Brutus: 'Tis a common proof,
That lowliness is young ambition's ladder
Whereto the climber-upward turns his face;
往上爬的人會把臉朝向它;
But when he once attains the upmost round,
He then unto the ladder turns his back,
Looks in the clouds, scorning the base degrees
By which he did ascend. (II, i, 21-27)

1. lowliness:
2. whereto = to which
3. climber-upward:
4. attain: 到達。
5. upmost:
7. scorn:
8. base degrees:

Ripe and Rot

他的喜劇 (如 Everyman in His Humor, Volpone, 等) 均可稱為「性格喜劇」(comedy of humors 或 character comedy), 因為劇中的人物常有特殊的性格。

And so from hour to hour, we ripe, and ripe,
And then from hour to hour, we rot, and rot. (ll. 26-27)

All the world's a stage
And all the men and women merely players.
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts.
His acts being seven ages. (ll. 139-143)

Nothing Will Come of Nothing

1. Nothing will come of nothing.

Nothing will come of nothing. Speak again.

在英文裡,「他沒說話」應譯成 “He said nothing” 而非 "He said no words"。 Nothing will come of nothing 說某人came of a good family 便是說他生於好家庭。另注意:come of age 是「成年」之意。

Nothing will come of nothing

Nothing will come of nothing,而當你「悟空」時,也可以告訴別人 Nothing will come of nothing.

2. Let go thy hold when a great wheel runs down a hill.

水手會說 “Let go the anchor!” ,也會說 “Let go the rope!” 。

但注意:我們說 let it go, let him go,…等等,不說 let go it, let go him,…等等。同樣,我們也說 let fall the big tree (讓大樹倒下) ,let drop the handkerchief (丟下手帕) ,let slip the opportunity (讓機會溜了) 等,說 let it fall (drop, slip), 而不說 let fall (drop, slip) it.

成語 take hold of (抓住) 與 lose hold of (失去) 中之 hold 便是名詞。

3. A dog is obeyed in office.

政府的廳、局、處均可譯為 office, 如 the Office of Works (工務局) 。平常 office 是指辦公室、營業處,故 go to the office 便是去上班的意思。引申來說,office 指職權、官位等,故有 in office (在職、在位) 與 out of office (去職、下野) 之語,就像 in school (在學) 與 out of school (不在學) 一樣。

Nature and Nurture

A devil, a born devil, on whose nature
Nurture can never stick; on whom my pains,
仁慈地做,全,全都失敗,完全失敗;
Humanely taken, all, all lost, quite lost;
And as with age his body uglier grows,
So his mind cankers. (ll. 188-192)

(“You taught me language; and my profit on it is, I know how to curse.”)

Make Defect Perfection

I saw her once
Hop forty paces through the public street,
And having lost her breath, she spoke, and panted,
That she did make defect perfection,
And, breathless, power breathe forth. (228-32)

四、稍早在第一幕第三景中,侍女查迷安 (Charmian) 曾勸艷后說:「每樣事都隨他去,千萬別惹他生氣」(“In each thing give him way, cross him in nothing”)。但艷后回說:「你教導的像傻瓜,那樣反而會失掉他」(“Thou teachest like a fool: the way to lose him”)。

Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale
Her infinite variety: other women cloy
The appetites they feed, but she makes hungry,
Where most she satisfies. For vilest things
Become themselves in her, that the holy priests
Bless her, when she is riggish. (II, ii, 235-40)

2. pant:
3. defect:
4. power breathe forth = breathe forth power:
5. cross: (v.)
6.wither:
7. stale:
8. infinite variety:
9. cloy:
10. appetite:
11. vilest:
12. become themselves:
